Prospect Profile
Simon Muzziotti, speedy centerfielder, is this week’s Prospect Profile from the Phillies minor league system.
Steve Potter, author of Phillies Minor League Digest and www.philliesbaseballfan.com, offers his views of young Phillies players. Between streaming of minor league games and seeing games firsthand at BayCare Ballpark and Carpenter complex, Steve has seen every Phillies minor league player who played in the states in 2021. He’s a former corporate executive who retired in Clearwater, FL, but he’s hardly retired.
Simon Muzziotti — 23 years old — bats left, throw left — signed as an international free agent — 7/5/16 — Cumana, Venezuela.
This Fan’s View
Missed almost the entirety of the 2021 stateside season due to work visa issues in Venezuela. Did get over in time to participate to split 20 games among each minor league level and the Arizona Fall League. Is an excellent fielder, very good at closing gaps and ball tracking with plus speed. Offensively he’s a bit of a throwback lead off type hitter, a line drive, gap to gap hitter that is aggressive to put balls in play. Speed, defense and the ability to do the little things to win games are his strengths. For those who can remember Cesar Geronimo from the Big Red Machine’s heyday in the 1970’s, that’s my comp.
2022 Projection
Needs to play due to missed time, likely that opportunity is in either Reading or Lehigh Valley. ( won’t be in minor league spring training camp as he is on 40-man roster )
(“The Comeback Season”, Potter’s 6th annual Phillies Minor League Digest, is now available at www.amazon.com. He captures this year’s entire minor league season which didn’t exist in 2020 because covid).
