Don’t pay attention to the score on the big board, the Phillies never led by that score on this date.

September 23, Loss #3

The Phillies led, 3–2, after six innings before the Reds scored four times in the top of the seventh. 6–4 final gave the Reds a sweep of the three-game series.

In the bottom of the seventh the Phillies had the bases loaded with one out, but Tony Taylor and Johnny Callison struck out. They scored once in the eighth but left a runner on second in both that and the ninth inning.

In winning their seventh in the last eight games, Cincinnati pulled to within 3.5 games of the Phils.

In the morning, the North Philadelphia Post Office delivered 18 sacks of mail to the Phillies office at Connie Mack Stadium, an estimated 63,000 applications for World Series tickets. A few more sacks are expected tomorrow.
