September 27, Loss #7

Johnny Callison hit three home runs in the Phillies final home game on a Sunday afternoon. It fell way short as the Braved pounded out 22 hits in a 14–8 win and a sweep of the four-game series.

Jim Bunning, working on two days of rest, carried a 3–2 lead into the fourth inning when the Braves scored 6 times, 5 against the Phillies ace. Four more runs in the next inning sealed the outcome.

Down, 12–3, Callison’s homers came in his last threat-bats, solo shots in the sixth and eighth innings and a two-run homer in the ninth (#31). Each came on the first pitch and went over the 32-foot-high right field wall. He and Allen were 6-for-10, 4 runs, 5 RBI.

The Reds swept a doubleheader from the lowly Mets extending their winning streak to nine straight. They now occupied first place for the first time since the opening week.

The Phils held the top spot for the past 73 days. They have five games left, all against teams they have to beat. Three in St. Louis and two season-ending games in Cincinnati.
